Help America Vote Act of 2002 - HAVA |
|
KSDISABILITYVOTE.ORG Help America Vote Act of 2002 As the official Protection and Advocacy System for Kansas, the Disability Rights Center is partially funded through the federal Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA). HAVA, 42 U.S.C. § 15301-15545 , was signed into law on October 29, 2002, to overhaul federal elections in the United States through a new set of minimum voting standards that each state and territory must follow. To the disability community, HAVA is more than an election reform statute; it is a fundamental rights and civil rights law. It gave individuals with disabilities what no other previous civil rights statute had given before: the right to participate in elections as other voters do and to cast a private and independent ballot. Part of HAVA is the Protection and Advocacy for Voting Access (PAVA) program. The purpose of the PAVA program is to "ensure the full participation in the electoral process for individuals with disabilities, including registering to vote, casting a vote and accessing polling places." DRC’s unique role under HAVA and PAVA is to advocate to help ensure this purpose is carried out, including registering people with disabilities and helping them cast a ballot. DRC is non-partisan and does not advocate for any particular candidates, political parties, etc. More in-depth information about HAVA can be found at the National Disability Rights Network (NDRN) (HAVA) If you have any questions or need assistance please contact DRC. DRC’s goal is to make this website
understandable and useful. This website is not intended to provide
specific legal advice. Please contact and attorney for advice or for
assistance based on you particular situation.
